The Mission of the NWPC is to ensure that the Borough’s Comprehensive Plan and its Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance are consistent with the Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code.  Its responsibilities include:

Reviewing the Borough’s Plans and recommending to Borough Council any necessary amendments.
Reviewing all plans for development and expansion within the Borough.
Anticipating any potential problems relating to development.
Representing the Borough on land use matters with neighboring municipalities.

Anyone wishing to expand or to initiate new development must appear before the NWPC.  This can be arranged by contacting the Borough Manager.

Weingartner Park

3 acre recreation area located at Second and Summit Streets is a passive area with a variety of black walnut, norway maple, white pine, dogwood, beech, sweetgum, hemlock and cherry trees and pathways and benches to enjoy.

Hess Park

Newly developed in 2010 with a walking path, play area, and pavilion.  This secluded park, located near the intersection of Eighth and Walnut Streets,  is a great place to take a stroll and relax after a long day.

Wee Walers

Located at 332-334 Shearer Street it is a playground developed for the use of small children with equipment designed for ages 8 and under.

Nor-Gwyn Pool

Located at Parkside Place north of the Borough on Sumneytown Pike. Operated by the Nor-Gwyn Pool Commission, whose members are North Wales Borough, Upper Gwynedd Township and the Lions Club. Applications are available at the Borough office or at the pool office during the summer season.

Second Street Park

Located at Second Street & Prospect Avenue is a tennis court area open to the public seven days a week. Park closes at dusk.

Ninth Street Park

Located at Ninth & Church Streets is part of the Dodsworth Run watershed. Stormwater landscaping with a variety of plantings attracts many species of birds to the Park. There is trail that goes through Park with footbridge over drainage way where people can stop and bird watch or just enjoy the natural setting.Hess Park1.44 acres of natural area. Plans are being developed to provide walking path, picnic area, open area for games such as volleyball, variety of native plantings, and rainwater garden. Project is expected to be completed by end of 2009.

Fourth Street Park

11,000 square foot open area used by local children for baseball games. Variety of native plants and clay totem poles adorn the two front corners of the Park with open area throughout the rest of the park that can be used for a game of softball, horseshoes, volleyball. The clay totem poles were made by Borough residents. There is a “fan” stand in the right rear corner. The “fans” are clay masks made by Borough residents mounted on a stand.

Eighth Street Park

“A Child’s Garden” developed by local children with brick walking path, plantings and benches.

Nor Gwyn Baseball

Offers softball for all ages 6 to 16, baseball ages 7 throug adult. Baseball offers T-ball. Programs for girls and boys begin in April. For registration information contact George Wicks 610-584-9169

Adopt A Park

Residents, non-profit groups, service groups are welcome to adopt a Borough Park to do a once or twice a year clean-up, or more if they so choose. The Borough welcomes new ideas for the parks and encourages everyone to use the Borough Parks.

HARB’s purpose is to help protect the distinctive and historic character of the North Wales Borough by considering the effects of proposed changes to buildings and properties within historic districts and by ruling on their appropriateness.

The North Penn Volunteer Fire Company has been in existence for over 110 years. The purpose of the company is to provide for the prevention of and protection from fires, fire safety education, fire suppression and emergency medical services to the residents and businesses of the Borough of North Wales, Lower Gwynedd Township and the surrounding communities.

The North Penn Volunteer Fire Company was incorporated in 1930 in Pennsylvania as a nonprofit corporation. Most of their funds are derived from the fund raising activities of their members, and the generous donations of constituents. They are an all-volunteer organization relying on the generous donation of time from their 60+ members. Their membership consists of Volunteer Active (individuals 18 years or over) and Volunteer Junior Active (individuals 16 and 17 years old) members who express an interest in actively participating in firefighting activities. They also have Volunteer contributing members, members who contribute their time or talent to the company in ways other than firefighting.

The VMSC provides emergency ambulance services to the North Penn area and surrounding communities. In addition, they conduct rescue operations and provide support services to other ambulance squads, police departments, fire companies, and industry. They also conduct emergency medical training for their membership and the general public.

The Borough Public Works Department maintains 11.46 miles of paved roads, with an additional 2 miles of State owned and maintained highway. The State maintained street within the Borough is East and West Walnut Street. The Public Works Department also maintains 8 park areas within the Borough.

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining all storm water collection and conveyance facilities throughout the Borough which consists of storm drain inlets, culverts, piping and outfall points. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection requires all municipalities to monitor, detect and eliminate illicit discharges that can contaminate the water quality in streams. The Department plows and salts all Borough Roads and State Road within the Borough. It would be a great help if all vehicles were parked in driveways where available to facilitate roads being plowed wider.

The Public Works Department maintains all directional/traffic flow signs within the Borough, paints crosswalks for school crossings, maintains the street lights, school signal and traffic signal, performs routine street sweeping program throughout the year.

General Information:
The following services and information are available at the North Wales Borough Police Department, Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Copies of accident reports may be obtained from the police office. The cost is $15.00. Please call with your request prior to arrival between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Please make checks payable to North Wales Borough.

Parking tickets may be paid by mail or in person with a personal check or cash at the Police Department. Please include the parking ticket with payment. If you desire to plead “Not Guilty” to a parking ticket and would like to request a hearing, please wait until you receive a citation in the mail. Please be advised that if you are found guilty at the hearing, the cost is substantially increased from the cost of the original parking ticket.

Fingerprinting is available by appointment to Borough Residents and employees of Borough Businesses, Monday through Friday 8:00 AM through 4:00 PM.

All residents and businesses that possess alarm systems are required by Borough Ordinance to register their alarm with the Police Department. The fee for an Alarm Permit is $45.00. Thereafter, there is a $25.00 Alarm Permit annual renewal fee. Applications may be obtained from the Police Department or from this web site.

Bicycle registration is available at no cost at the police department by appointment only.

Driver’s Manuals are available at the police department.

North Wales Police Department Officers:

The North Wales Police Department is comprised of four full time and two part-time officers.

One officer is assigned to the Montgomery County D.U.I. Task Force. This officer along with officers from surrounding departments participates in DUI road check points and DUI roving patrols in our community.

Three officers are Special Agents for the Montgomery County Drug Task Force.

One officer is assigned to the Montgomery County Tobacco Compliance program. This program monitors sales of tobacco and meets with local merchants concerning sales to minors.

One officer is part of the Community Action Team for Domestic Violence.

One officer is certified E.M.T. (Emergency Medical Technician).

Two officers are certified Firearms Instructors / both NRA and State Police Certified.

Two officers are Crisis Intervention Specialists who deal with mental health issues.

Tactical Response Team:

The North Wales Police Department has one officer assigned to the North Penn Tactical Response Team. The team was formed in 1981 and is comprised of highly trained professionals, from six local police departments, who respond to high-risk situations.

Borough Council

Council members are elected by Ward in the Borough and serve a four year term. To serve, Council member must have resided in the Borough for at least one year immediately preceding the election. Some of the Council functions include:

Make appropriations, adopt annual budget, incur debt
Adopt, amend the Building Codes, Zoning Codes and General Codes of the Borough
Appoint to various advisory boards
Levy taxes
Hold public hearings

Office of the Mayor

The Mayor is elected at large, serves a four year term, and must meet the same residency requirements as a council member. The Mayor’s duties are to preserve order in the Borough, to enforce ordinances and regulations, to remove nuisances and to exact a faithful performance of the duties from appointed officials. The Mayor supervises the Police Department and has responsibilities in emergency management. The Mayor administers oaths, may vote to break a tie vote in council, may veto ordinances or resolutions, and may perform marriage ceremonies.

Stroll Our Streets and Listen to the Whispers of the Past.

Our inviting front porches promise a warm welcome. North Wales treasures its independence and uniqueness, reflected in our history and architectural charm. North Wales is the oldest of the boroughs in the North Penn Valley, an area that links historic Montgomery County and Bucks County in Pennsylvania. In 1869, North Wales was the first borough to be incorporated by Montgomery County courts, not the state.

Part of a 1702 William Penn land grant, this rich farming country was given the name “Gwynedd” for the homeland of the earliest settlers. Mostly Quakers, they came from the Gwynedd area in northwestern Wales, once an ancient kingdom, and now a county in North Wales. Germans soon added their heritage to the mix.

Before 1850, a cluster of farms, plus a 1776 shared Lutheran and Reformed Church, dotted the present borough’s landscape. Today’s Main Street, an old Indian trail, was laid out as the Great Road in 1728. By 1828, it had become today’s Sumneytown Pike, a toll road until 1914, and always an important route to Philadelphia.

When the North Penn Railroad extended tracks to the rural settlements north of Philadelphia in the 1850′s, “North Wales” became a station stop and prospered. Hotels, services, and businesses flourished, and change was in the air.

Farmland fronting a short portion of Sumneytown Pike was gradually sold off for home sites, and many buildings survive. Some of the large homes at the turn of the 20th century catered to summer guests from the city. “Idlewilde”, still on Main Street, hosted the Emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro II, when he was visiting Philadelphia to open the 1876 U.S. Centennial Exhibition with President Ulysses S. Grant.

The talented artist with paralyzed hands, Willian T. Trego (1858-1909), had his home and studio in North Wales, and costumed residents often posed as his models. His realistic historical paintings are displayed at venues such as Valley Forge National Park.

In 2000, the North Wales Historic Preservation District was established by Borough Council and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to protect the architecture that is a visual reminder of the borough’s past. It is the first Historic District in the North Penn boroughs. Explore our past… and enjoy our small town.
